Trafford is a Metropolitan Borough with a population of about 216,000 and is situated to the south west of Manchester in N.W. England.
It is divided into 21 Wards, each of which elects 3 Councillors. Councillors serve for 4-year periods and the Council is elected by thirds i.e. one-third of the total
Council stands for election each year, with the exception of one year in four when there are no elections.

At the national level, Trafford contains two complete Parliamentary Constituencies (Stretford & Urmston and Altrincham & Sale West) and shares a third
(Wythenshawe & Sale East) with the adjacent City of Manchester. Stretford & Urmston and Wythenshawe & Sale West are both represented by Labour Members of Parliament; Bev Hughes M.P. and Paul Goggins M.P. respectively. The other Constituency still has a Conservative M.P."
